As per the notification issued by the Director of NCERT, Sridhar Srivastava, the focus groups will have a one-year mandate and are expected to submit their position papers to the National Steering Committee by March 2022 for further discussion and necessary actions. to be taken to develop the FNC.
The three categories of themes are – curriculum and pedagogy; cross-cutting themes; and other important areas of the national education policy 2020. The terms of reference of the 25 focus groups, as detailed by Srivastava, include the development of a clear understanding of the themes according to the NEP perspective and recommendations. 2020, in particular with regard to the proposed 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 curriculum and pedagogical structure.
The terms also require that the focus groups specify implementation strategies at each stage and also deliberate on themes regarding essentials, experiential learning and other pedagogies, multidisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity, vocational education, multilingualism, holistic assessment, skills and competences, knowledge system, educational technology including ICT, inclusive education, gender issues, etc.
The focus group should also seek updates on position papers developed by their State / UT counterparts and draw input from them.
The national discussion group on “The philosophy and objectives of education: the guiding principles” will be chaired by Prakash C Bartunia, chancellor, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, while the one on “the care and education of the early childhood and basic literacy and arithmetic (age: 0 -8 years) ‘will be chaired by Harshad Patel, Vice-Chancellor, IITE, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The science education discussion group will be chaired by Milind Sudhakar Marathe, from KJ Somaiya College of Engineering, Vidyavihar, Mumbai, while Professor Sanjeev Arora from Princeton University will chair the mathematics committee. B Mahadevan, IIM, Bengaluru will chair the “Knowledge of India” discussion group.
There will be 12 focus groups that will deliberate and create position papers related to curriculum development and pedagogy.
