OGLESBY — Highlighting “another financial benefit of participating in CCSVI,” Director of Financial Aid Eric Johnson said 1,776 students received higher education emergency relief funds this spring and that more than 800 of these students also received financial aid.
“The percentage of students who met their tuition and fee obligations and then received a refund check was nearly 80% in the fall and over 97% in the spring,” said Johnson.
Last fall and spring, 2,653 students received $6.7 million in Pell, MAP, loans, veterans benefits and scholarships from the CCSVI Foundation. In fiscal year 2021, 3,460 students received $8.3 million.
“Our office helps make higher education more accessible to students and families,” Johnson said.
In other cases, trustees approved a four-year collective agreement with 74 teachers represented by the American Federation of Teachers Local 1810.
The contract for full-time teachers and counselors includes raises ranging from 3.5 to 4.25 percent, incentives for professional development, early retirement and health, and more opportunities for counselors to serve during the peak periods.
CCSVI President Jerry Corcoran thanked bargaining teams for reaching agreements before existing collective agreements expire on June 30. Last month, administrators approved a five-year collective agreement with SEIU Local 138 representing 16 custodial and custodial staff.
In addition, the compensation of 256 employees “not concerned by a negotiated work agreement” was approved. The group, made up mainly of support staff and administrators, will receive increases of 4%. Special adjustments have been made for several individuals.
“To stay competitive and provide a sustainable salary, it has been determined that approximately 30 people warrant adjustments,” said Vice President of Business Services and Finance Matt Seaton.
In another action, board members approved the submission of three projects totaling more than $14 million to the state’s Community College Capital Resource Allocation Management (RAMP) program, including:
- A Library/Student Success Center for $6.5 million (CCSVI’s share is $1.6 million). The center will include tutoring, student support and library services.
- the expansion of the nursing program – including a simulation lab at B201 – for nearly $2.7 million; CCSVI’s share is $674,800.
- A $5.2 million agricultural center (CCSVI’s share is $1.3 million) to house a classroom and laboratory.
The trustees also approved:
- Appointment of Anna Bruch as Acting Director of Nursing. Bruch began teaching nursing at CCVI in August 2000.
- Hiring of Justin Denton as Director of Information Technology Services effective June 20. Denton is Senior Director of IT Support Services at Collegis Education in Oak Brook and former Program Chair and Acting Dean of the School of Technology at Rasmussen College – also in Oak Brook. He previously worked at Centrue Bank in Streator in IT infrastructure.
- Hiring of an agricultural instructor, Dr. Jennifer Timmers. Timmers earned a Ph.D. in agronomy from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in agriculture from Western Kentucky University.
- The resignation of Promise K. Yong, professor of chemistry since 2008. Originally from Cameroon, “PK” was the first lecturer of CCVI in 2021 and co-winner of the Stephen Charry Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence in 2017. The former CCSVI student Devanshi Patel, who graduated in May from Northern Illinois University with a degree in biochemistry said, “Dr. Yong’s organic chemistry course prepared me for success at NIU. He was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. »
- Place the “Leadership Elevation Framework” certificate in inactive status.
- Authorization to continue payment of standard operating expenses from July 1 until adoption of the budget.
- A rolling three-year contract for President Jerry Corcoran.
- Contracts for Seaton, vice president of academic affairs Gary Roberts and vice president of student services Mark Grzybowski.
- Insurance renewals of nearly $220,000, an increase of 10.3% over the previous year.
- Phone system upgrade with Burwood Group for nearly $130,000 plus $2,885 per month over three years. The HEERF-funded system is hosted in the cloud; each office will receive new telephones.
- A $35,000 Lifepak heart monitor for Stryker Sales’ EMS program of Portage, Michigan.
- Mechanical upgrades totaling $335,500 from Dodson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning of Pontiac.
- A Dell server for $241,000 paid through HEERF.
- Approval of the minutes of the closed session of May 12.
- A minute of silence was observed for Patrick Solon of Streator, who died on May 16 of ALS. Solon was a brother of board chairman Everett Solon.
- The overall student-athlete average was 3.02 this spring: 3.2 for women and 2.89 for men.
- There were 372 spring graduates who earned 477 degrees and certificates, compared to 420 graduates who earned 520 degrees and certificates in the spring of 2021.
- Public services assistant Diane Bishop retired on May 12 after 16 years. “I really enjoyed the variety of assignments as I worked in so many different fields. I always thought I had the best job in college,” Bishop said in his retirement letter.
- Bookkeeper Maryann Kettman resigned on May 20. “I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned, but most of all I will miss the many friends I’ve made here,” Kettman said.
- Golf coach Sean Kennedy resigned May 26, and part-time CNA instructor Kathy Jakubek also resigned. Assistant sociology teacher Christine Dove resigned on May 19 after 15 years of teaching full-time and part-time at CCSVI.
- Corcoran received a card from Illinois Valley Region Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bill Zens and Director of Operations/Membership Penny Volkert acknowledging 48 years of membership in the CCSVI to CCSVI. “Looking forward to working together to serve our communities for years to come. Go Eagles! – Bill and Penny.
