Conflict between a Cheektowaga woman and a credit card company

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY (WKBW) — In early January, Helena Turner of Cheektowaga sent money orders to pay her Discover Card bill, but now, two months later, the company says she never paid.

“I always pay a week, two weeks, three weeks early,” Turner said.

Turner said Jan. 4 that she filled out a money order for $91 and then another for $0.98 after she forgot to add it to the first order.

When she later received an email from Discover saying she hadn’t paid, she ignored it. Turner said when the missing payment emails kept coming, that’s when she called Discover.

“Felt like the twilight zone,” Turner pointed out.

Turner said he was told over the phone that Discover had received the money order, but the company could not cash it.

“They said we couldn’t cash the money order because MoneyGram wouldn’t release the money,” Turner said.

On Monday, Turner said a MoneyGram representative said there were no issues and the money orders were never cashed. She can buy a replacement money order for $18, but she doesn’t want to pay again.

On Monday, Turner said his Discover balance is now $108. His good credit score dropped by 63 points because of this accident.

Turner told 7 Problem Solver Michael Schwartz that she hasn’t used her Discover cards since this dilemma began.

Schwartz spoke with a Discover rep on Monday who said he’ll have to handle this directly with the client.

“It’s so complicated,” Turner explained.

7 Problem Solvers will continue to monitor this situation, in the hope of bringing you a resolved update.
